The Assam Fashion Week, the Fashion Festival of North East
India is one of the biggest and grandest carnivals comprising
of events like Seminars, Quiz, Photo Exhibition, Garment
Exhibition, Sketch Contest, Designers’ Contest, Make-Over
Contest, Model Hunt, and Ramp Shows all relating to the
fashion industry to provide a mega platform for the budding
and upcoming fashion designers of the N.E. region to showcase
their talent and exclusive creations thus providing a great
stage to stand under the same roof with the reputed and famed
designers of the region and to rub shoulders with them.
The main attraction of this year’s show was the special
appearance of personalities like Zubeen Garg, Kopil Bora,
Jerifa Wahid, Nishita Goswami and a host of other celebrities
who shared and walked the ramp along with the models at the
‘Pragjyoti’ ITA-Machkhowa Cultural Complex, Guwahati held from
November 11 to 13, 2010. This three-day event showcased
attires and outfits designed by reputed and well-known
designers of this region through exhibition and fashion shows
before an estimated audience of over a thousand per day. The
first two days’ events consisting of Exhibition and Seminars
began from 11 a.m. onwards and ended at around 7 p.m. in the
evening. The Grand Finale was held on the last day of this
three-day fashion festival from 6 p.m. onwards.
Day one (November 11, 2010) was marked by noted singer, Zubeen
Garg inaugurating the Photo Exhibition at around 3:30 p.m.
Zubeen then paid visit to the stalls displaying the creative
designs of the reputed fashion designers of the region like
Garima Saikia Garg, Dhiraj Deka, Manimala Mahanta Ahmed,
Pallavi Bhuyan, Shankar Kumar, Debjani Borah, and Nayanmoni,
Karabi & Dipjyoti. A classical dance performance by Mrigakshi
Talukdar then followed as the next event. The Inauguration
Ceremony was kicked off by Zubeen Garg and Kopil Bora at 4
p.m. flanked by the Founder President of CEC, Mr. Dipankar
Dutta. The first Fashion Show displaying the creative designs
of all the leading designers and students from CEC and
Hindustan College began from 5 p.m. and ended at around 7 p.m.
Day two (November 12, 2010) was an event-filled occasion
starting with Make-Over Contest at 1 p.m. judged by renowned
beautician, Mrs. Bhanu Sarma who was earlier felicitated by
the Founder President of CEC, Mr. Dipankar Dutta, where the
winning make-up artist was Miss. Bornali Sarma . The next
event was Fashion Quiz at 2 p.m. won by Chintumoni Hazarika
and Dipjyoti Borah. The last and most expected event of the
day, Model Hunt happened at 6 p.m. where wannabe male and
female models sashayed on the ramp giving their ultimate best
in designers wears presided over by renowned judges like
Garima Saikia Garg, Shimanta Sekhar, Kamal Barman and Diganta
Hazarika.
Day three (November 13, 2010) was the Grand Finale of this
three-day spectacle. The day began at 6 pm. with the
traditional lighting of the diya or lamp by the Founder
President of CEC, Mr. Dipankar Dutta. The Inauguration
Ceremony was kicked off by Chief Guests, Jagadish Bora, MD,
Northeastern Handloom & Handicraft Development Corporation
along with Dilip Barua, MD of Fabric Plus India Ltd. and most
noted fashion designer, Bhaskar Dev Goswami who were
felicitated by Mr. Dipankar Dutta. A classical dance followed
and then came the Designers’ Contest where the budding and
aspiring designers displayed their creations in front of the
judges, Mr. Dilip Barua and Mr. Bhaskar Dev Goswami and it was
won by upcoming designer, Nilanjan Talukdar. An array of
designs and creations followed this event by the reputed and
renowned designers of the N.E. region like Pallavi Bhuyan
where Assamese actor, Kopil Bora walked the ramp in her
designer wear along with the models. Then came Ms. Atu’s
creations followed by Mridul Mazinder Baruah’s collection.
Debjani Borah’s designs followed soon after. The students of
Hindustan College, Impi Borah and Sayeda Summaiya Sofique
displayed their creations thereafter. Soon came designer,
Dhiraj Deka’s turn who wooed the audience with his mesmerizing
creative designs where Assamese movie actors, Kopil Bora and
Jerifa Wahid donned his creations and strutted the ramp.
Shillong’s designer duo of Tenzing and Riya displayed their
designs next. Manimala Mahanta Ahmed’s creations ensued as the
next designer wear show where Jerifa Wahid sashayed on the
ramp in her creation. The next event was felicitation of
Assamese veteran actor, Biju Phukan by Mr. Dipankar Dutta and
Mrs. Arunima Dutta, former Mrs. India-World First Runner-up
and gave away the prizes for the Designers’ Contest, Make-Over
Contest and Lucky Draw to the winners in each category. Then
came Shankar Kumar’s creations closely followed by eagerly
expected designer wear collection of Garima Saikia Garg where
along with the models, Zubeen Garg, Kopil Bora, Nishita
Goswami and Utpal Das enthralled the audience by walking down
the ramp in her creations. Soon after that, Kopil Bora along
with Mr. Dipankar Dutta gave away the prizes to the winners of
the Fashion Quiz and Fashion Sketch Competition. Nayanmoni,
Karabi & Dipjyoti’s creations followed soon after. Students of
CEC, Dipanjali Das and Anupama Das too displayed their
creative designs as the last designer show of the night. A
vote of thanks was given by Mr. Dipankar Dutta and he
announced the winners of the Model Hunt Contest held the
earlier day and gave away prizes to the winners, Tribeni
Barman and Ishan Bora in respective female and male categories
thus bringing the curtains down to this mega event at 9 p.m.
This ended the glorious Grand Finale of this three-day fashion
bonanza and the audience left the Machkhowa-ITA beaming with
satisfaction and a smile on their faces.
CEC, A Registered Society has been the proud organizer of this
mega extravaganza for the last five years. Mr. Dipankar Dutta,
Founder President of CEC Group of Institutions said that since
2005 there were many problems while arranging such a grand
event, but by the support of all section of the people,
designer fraternity and the media, the event is becoming
successful every year. The sponsorships for the event were
always a big concern for the organizers. The event is not just
a fashion show; it is a platform for the young entrepreneurs
in the fashion industry. He also appealed to the buyers to
give support to the designers showcasing their creations in
this mega event.
